The Blue Rose – S.P. Flannery

The bluebird’s cobalt plumage
mollifies the obsession of breeders,
insert a novel protein sequence
into the wild type
to superficially express this hue
unnatural, not even mutated
so future generations could
delight bouquets, momentary
satisfaction from awards and
accolades, blue ribbons collected
for disfigurement and manipulation.
